Building Science II – Build a Better House Series

Building Science II focuses on the practical application of building science principles to key materials and systems used in residential construction. Participants will learn how climate, energy performance, and building components work together to impact comfort, durability, and efficiency. The class explores topics such as climate zones, diagnostic testing and HERS scoring, Net Zero Ready construction, and the role of major building systems. Participants will also review best practices for roofs, insulation, HVAC systems—including heat pumps, ERVs, makeup air, and humidity control—along with water heaters, gas vs. electric systems, windows, and foundations.

Matt Mitchell is the owner of James Andrews Custom Homes and has worked as a builder and REALTOR® since 2002. He specializes in high-performance, energy-efficient homes and is passionate about building science and sustainable construction. Matt holds degrees from North Lake College, University of Texas, and Dallas Theological Seminary. He served as president of the Dallas Builders Association during 2020–2021 and has held several leadership roles within the organization.
