The Dallas Builders Association Loses a Legend – John Bynum 1938-2026
John Paul Bynum
April 5, 1938 – January 30, 2026
John Paul Bynum, age 87, passed away on January 30, 2026, in Dallas, Texas. He was born on April 5, 1938, in Dallas and lived a full, adventurous, and deeply meaningful life rooted in family, friendship, and the homebuilding industry he loved.
John was a home builder for more than 50 years and a proud, active member of the Dallas Builders Association for decades. He served on the Membership Committee for over 20 years and often shared the story of why he became so involved with the Association. Early in his career, a fellow Dallas BA member helped him correct a mistake involving deed restrictions on a project. That moment left a lasting impression. John would often say that the Association was a place where, if your wagon is in a ditch, other members are always willing to help you get out.
Over the years, John became one of the most decorated members in Dallas Builders Association history. He served as President of the Association in 1988 and earned recognition as one of the highest-ranking Spike recruiters, with 1,555 credits, ranking second overall in the Association. In 2011, he received the Hugh Prather Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Dallas Builders Association member, recognizing his extraordinary service and commitment to the industry.
Beyond his professional achievements, John lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed traveling the world, competing in Texas chili cook-offs, and exploring shipwrecks and underwater archaeological sites as an advanced certified scuba diver. He loved live music, dancing, hunting, reading, and playing poker, much to the enjoyment of his buddies who appreciated both his company and his generosity. Above all else, John cherished making memories with his wife, his humongous family, and his lifelong friends.
John lived an eventful life filled with countless stories and laughter. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend. He will be remembered for his kindness, his wisdom, his love of people, and his unwavering belief in helping others.
Interment will take place at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas, located on Greenville Avenue, on Thursday, February 12, 2026. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at noon.
